Get Outdoors! (And Stay Safe)

A guest post today. I love the outdoors though it's hard to find time to go much with my two very young children. As they get older you can be sure I will make time for this.

Being outdoors is essential for a healthy brain and body, children nowadays spend far too much time indoors in front of the television and computer (and phone). And if you're stuck in your life and don't see a way to make changes that you know you need to make, I highly recommend from personal experience that do a back-country camping trip ALONE in bear country. Yes you read that right. It can change your life in a really good way. It did mine.

And without further intro, here is a short guest post addressing a few issues about staying safe when camping. Enjoy!
Camping is still seen by many today as one of the quintessential American experiences. Let’s face it. Despite all the tech advances happening around us, there’s nothing like spending time out there with nature. Things like camping help us maintain a healthy balance between nature and the buzz of the modern grind.

If you’re planning a camping trip, then you need to know how to keep yourself safe. Here’s how.

Shed your reliance on electricity

Have you got yourself in the mindset of someone who can’t get by without electricity? It’s common these days. People almost feel some kind of modern culture shock when they step out into the wilderness. WiFi hotspots are pretty rare out in the forests of America, after all.

Try to get yourself used to going without electricity for a few days before you leave. If you’re confronted with a problem, don’t jump straight to your phone for answers. This, of course, doesn’t mean you should leave without stocking up on fully-charged phone batteries. But you’re not guaranteed a strong signal out there. Know the area

Don’t go camping somewhere if you’ve not spent time in the area first! A map, of course, is essential if you’re going to a new area. And yes, much of the attraction in camping trips is in seeing a new place. But keeping everything a complete mystery might not work to your advantage. Spend a few hours in the area, making sure things correspond to the map you have.

If you’re planning on going for a camping trip that lasts multiple days, then you may even want to try camping there for one night before you begin. This doesn’t have to include everyone who will be on the proper trip. Just having one member of the party out there for an evening will be enough for checking temperatures and emergency measures. Come fully equipped

When you’re packing your safety materials, you need to have a little brainstorm. What kind of danger could you find yourself in when you’re out there? Think about all the possible situations and come appropriately prepared. If anyone gets a cut or another similar injury, then you’ll need a first aid kit. If it starts raining, you’re going to need a raincoat. If you get dirty, you’ll need hygiene products.

Make sure food is stored properly!

It’s amazing how many budding campers make mistakes in this area! You’re going to be a long way from any convenience stores, so it’s important to make sure your food supply is properly sorted out.

Non-perishable foods are, of course, a favorite with campers. They don’t require much thought or looking after. Nuts, pre-packaged meals and beans are all great examples. But if you’re planning on packing more, than make sure you bring a cooler. Make sure you bring some tarp with which to insulate it once you’re at your destination!
